Tanzanite Riviera
Tanzanite is one of the most recent gemstones introduced to modern jewelry. It was discovered in 1967 in northern Tanzania, on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, within an extremely restricted area known as the Merelani Hills. To this day, it exists only in this single location on Earth.
The first commercial recognition of the stone occurred when the explorer and prospector Manuel d’Souza found the blue-violet crystals and presented them to the international market. Tiffany & Co. itself was responsible for naming it “tanzanite,” directly associating the gem with its country of origin.
What makes tanzanite distinctive is its pleochroism. The same stone displays different colors depending on the viewing angle, ranging from deep blue to violet and slightly purplish nuances. In a riviera, this characteristic creates a dynamic visual effect, as every movement of the wrist changes the perception of color along the piece.
The gemstones in this jewel were selected to maintain chromatic and optical consistency throughout the entire line, an essential requirement in a well-executed riviera. Continuity of size and tone allows the piece to function as a continuous band of color rather than a sequence of isolated stones.
The 18k white gold structure was built with firm articulations and correct metal proportions, ensuring flexibility in wear and real durability. The jewel follows the body’s movement without structural fragility, securely supporting a set of gemstones naturally more delicate than diamond.
It is a piece that combines technique and curation. The rarity of the gem lies not only in its beauty, but in the fact that its source is unique and finite. This is a jewel whose material cannot be replaced.
